California’s Wreck & Reference are back with a new two-song 7inch, ~~Content~~ (pronounced ‘No Content’), that is truly genre-defying in every way. Heavy and experimental with nods to post-metal, industrial, electronic, noise and doom, this duo’s latest work is a trainwreck of contradictions yet devastatingly somber and addictive. The first track on Content is “Absurdities and Echos”, more melodic and atmospheric than anything the band has done before, while the second song, “Abhorrence” is concise and raw, sharply contrasting with the first. Formed by drummer Ignat Frege and multi-instrumentalist Felix Skinner, Wreck and Reference play by their own rules and create a sound that is unorthodox and captivating – without the use of stringed instruments: using only drums, vocals, and a Korg sampler – on this new 7inch.

Wreck & Reference got started in 2011 in San Francisco, CA and released their demo, the highly-acclaimed Black Cassette, that same year. This demo was first self-released on tape, then later on vinyl through The Flenser. Black Cassette immediately turned heads and upon first listen of this EP, Lurker’s Path said Wreck and Reference were “…redefining heaviness within rock music”, likely due to their use of samples, live drums and vocals to craft a sound that is melancholic and fierce.

The following year, Wreck and Reference released their debut full-length ~~Youth~~ even more critical praise. Invisible Oranges said this two-piece band “…pushes the traditional metal template towards regions unexplored, expanding the sonic legacies of Swans’ filth and Big Black’s harshness.” Even more dark and mysterious than its predecessor, ~~Youth~~ catapulted Wreck and Reference to the forefront of unconventional and mysterious heavy music.

~~Content~~ will be available on May 21st, 2013 on digital and vinyl formats from avant-garde metal label Flenser Records, and song and video premieres will be announced soon.

Thanks to everyone who has ever been involved with something that we did. Our debt of gratitude can never be repaid and we can not be more thankful for the experiences that we had and the friends that we made along the way. We apologize to those who were expecting to see us in Europe and all around the US this summer, but this West Coast tour will be the last tour that we do in the foreseeable future (a final show in the Bay Area will most likely be done afterwards). Some interesting background info on Sugimoto’s strategy for capturing these images:

To create each image, Sugimoto would take a long-exposure photograph of a cinema screen for the entire duration of a movie, resulting in a blank white screen. “Different movies give different brightnesses,” [Sugimoto] said. “If it’s an optimistic story, I usually end up with a bright screen; if it’s a sad story, it’s a dark screen. Occult movie? Very dark.” The project was partly the result of wanting to make a simple form visible: “The simplest forms have authority, like a blank white light. And how do you photograph that? You need a framework to make it visible. But this is not simply white light; it is the result of too much information.”

Also: there was a book made from this series, but it is very rare (edition of 4000) and therefore pretty expensive (upwards of $300). I would love to own it.

P.S. I don’t normally post photosets because each work of art that I post is so unique, and I like to give you all the opportunity to reblog the individual works that you love, without being annoyed by the presence of those you think less of, but I am making an exception in this case because I do really enjoy viewing the photos from this series all together. I hope you’ll agree.
